Practising French with SingStar

Embedded video here
Duration: 00:50

By using various ICTs to show news reports and YouTube videos, playing music DVDs and organising competitive games such as Trivial Pursuit to teach French, Graham aims to increase his students’ exposure to the target language.

Graham has used French language movies to introduce French drama into the classroom. Students also like singing French songs using SingStar. This serves as a useful tool for helping their pronunciation. Graham even runs a school-wide French SingStar competition, which is very popular with students at all levels! In this way, Graham makes creative use of ICTs to improve language input and output.

Suggestions for reflection

How could you use youth culture in your language area to increase interest and student engagement?

Have you considered using wikis with the class as a means of enabling students to work co-operatively in sharing Internet content in the target language or in exploring culture?

Hello, I would like to establish contact with the teacher that uses singstar in the french classroom, as I am writing a dissitation about the same topic, but with the spanish classroom, and I would love to interview you.

Thank you very much.

Jose Subires.

Bravo Graham - I've been in your classroom once and had the opportunity to see your material - but there was no student when I visited Riccarton High School, except for Jenny who made a brief demonstration. Now with this video I've seen your students practising and it makes me wish more students could be offered this opportunity to improve their French in such a happy and lively way, all over New Zealand. Keep up the good work !
